The publishing house of Adam and Charles Black was founded in 1807 when Adam Black opened his own bookshop shortly after his twenty-third birthday. Originally the company was based in Edinburgh, but in June 1889 the company made a somewhat traumatic move to London, setting up again in Soho Square. The firm has published a vast variety of work, over the course of its existence including: Who's who? from 1897 and P.G. Woodhouse's first book in 1902.
In map terms though, the firm published a number of atlases including: Black’s Atlas of North America 1854, Atlas of Australia Including the Goldfields’ (1853), leading onto the most complete collection of finely engraved country and region maps in Black's General Atlas of the World, first published in 1879, a Folio size volume containing 58maps, some of these measuring 12" x 15" and some printed double size, making spectacularly large pieces.
The company is perhaps most famous for its publication of other reference works, but the A&C Black collection of 19th and 20th century cartographic works is both extensive and varied. The company has most recently become part of Bloomsbury Publishing and continues to publish.
