Blackie and Son (1890 - 1991)
The Glasgow publishing house of Blackie & Sons was very active in nineteenth century, starting in around 1809. The founder was John Blackie Sr. (1782-1874), and initially this was the name used. Combining commercial weights and practised skills of the likes of William Sumerville, John Bartholomew and Archibald Fullerton, the firm ran for some years under the combined names: 'Blackie, Fullerton and Co.'.
Their first major publications appeared at the beginning of the nineteenth century and included large atlases combining a number of map styles, indicative of the varied practitioners involved. There were also subscription-based reference texts including and religious texts and graphics, but the main stay of the business centred around several major atlases. Blackie eventually bought out his partners in the mid nineteenth century and the firm became 'Blackie and Son. The company continued right up until 1991.
