A French engineer, cartographer, and engraver of the mid 19th century, perhaps best known for his 'Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de La France'. As well as the individual French departments etc, the continents of Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe and America also feature. These delightful hand-coloured steel plate engraved maps feature wide, decorative margins with elaborate illustrations depicting scenery, people, wildlife and potential trading goods of the areas.
As well as these beautiful decorative vignettes and graphics, the maps, in many cases, are filled with statistical, topographical, political and other useful data. Most of Levasseur's works were produced between 1838 and 1854; the first publication of National Atlas Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de La France being in 1847.
It was subsequently published several times after his death in 1854.
