Name:William Lizars
Dates: 1788-1859
Map type: Steel plate engraved maps.
Edinburgh based, the company of Lizars was founded in the early nineteenth century and continued until around 1850. The quality and detail of William's Scottish regional maps is undeniable. With his brother, Daniel Lizars the elder (1754-1812), they worked as partners for only a few years until 1818, before going their own ways and publishing individually until William died in 1859. After this, the company was sold to the renowned Edinburgh firm of W. A&K Johnston.
The next generation of Lizars continued in the business. Daniel Lizars (the Younger) was known to have toyed with techniques using copper plate engraving to re-create the look of older methods of printing such as woodblock. Experimentation like this proved interesting but far too expensive to be viable, leading to his ultimate bankruptcy and emigration to Canada in 1883.
